Message thermal expansion and contraction along with the frictions involved. Thermal cooling without friction would be of little or no use, and some may argue that removing heat at a faster rate than ambient dissipation would actually contribute to metal and gasket material warping or deformation. It's not only hot temperatures that effect metal properties, but the rate of change of temperature that really does damage over time.
